Would Wenger really offer Gael Clichy for Felipe Melo?
There have been a lot of Arsenal transfer rumours linking the Gunners with the Brazilian midfielder Felipe Melo since Juventus admitted they were prepared to listen to offers, but lately they are also saying that Gael Clichy could become part of the deal.
TuttuSport say that Arsenal have made a firm offer to make a straight swap, but as Juventus paid £24m for Melo just last summer, they are more likely to want a lump sum of cash as well as the French defender to recoup some of their losses.
Melo may well have had an awful season in Serie A last year, and has publicly fallen foul of the Juventus fans on more than one occasion, but is Clichy worth as much as Melo?
The 24 year-old Frenchman had a couple of injuries last season, but still made 32 appearances, and has now been a first-team regular for the last three years. Wenger said that the team needed a complete defensive shake-up this summer, but should Clichy be allowed to leave to clinch a deal for Melo?

No way! Clichy is a World Class fullback with the ability to go forward and blazing pace. He is currently one of, if not the best LB in the Premier League. Melo is a good player but not world class & Wenger wouldn’t dare give up a loyal Arsenal starter for that World Cup flop.

No way!! Melo for clichy would be a disaster, melo can’t control himself when ruffed up by other teams he showed that in the world cup by bein substituted early cos he flying in with tackles and then being sent off against holland, so teams like Bolton an Blackburn would have a field day against him, an would result in too many red cards then games missed why risk having someone like that in your team to ruin chances of anything this season

I must say this ,Clichy is a world class, but Gibbs will be a better player than him, the problem with him(Clichy) is that he fumbles in bigger stages and he is most time an injury prone, Arsenal has loads options on that left position,, lets just imagine Melo and Song in the middle and Fabregars in the front, forget it, we will beat any body, i think its fair one to swap for melo with Clichy who has always wanted to join barca or MADrid.
WENGER GO FOR THIS ONE. ITS BETTER THAN BUYING BABIES.

I don’t think Wenger will consider a swap deal. We have only Clichy and Gibbs who can confident play 3 for us.
It all seems as though Traore will be sold therefore he will not be considered. I can’t see any of our players ( as Campbell, Gallas and Silvestre ) leaving this summer.

I’d definately swap Clichy for Melo! The facts are that clichy was injured for the beginning of last season and we coped completely fine without him. Gibbs is more than able to fill his shoes, with Traore as understudy. Secondly we have found a greatly decreased performance when Song was injured, meaning the need for another quality defensive midfielder is farely high. Thirdly Arsenal as a team are getting trounced on constantly by lower teams who think that they can get success by “getting in our face(s)”. The fact that he is a temperamental player displays a quality that we as a club have been lacking since Viera left. So one signing would fix a lot of problems. its win win win!

Well said, Melo will help Arsenal when they are being kicked, he strong and reliable always. i checked him out in the world cup myself here in South Africa.
We have Gibbs, Troare and tom cruz, Swapping is best cause i dont see arsenal paying the high for the prayer of his caliber

i 2nd that, melo though offers more depth in a sense he fights hard for the ball and doesnt give it up easily, he is much too temperamental, gives away silly fouls, evident in the world cup, gets sent off.

Vieira was over the top sometimes, but not like this guy. Also, vieira was actually a GOOD PLAYER, melo is not in his league. Im all for getting an aggressive DM, but not one who will lose his head whenever we start losing, and he has to be good enough to play for arsenal. I dont think melo ticks those boxes.
We need someone aggressive and hard working, doesnt have to be a head-case. Annan looked very good, for example, and the two uruguayan holding midfielders did well..

People on here overrate Clichy I swear. He’s consistantly our weakest link at the back and for all his blazing pace, his crossing is just awful. He’s contributed one goal in 7 years! Get rid ASAP… But not for Melo. Just sell him for the 15 to 20 million I’ve heard thrown about and buy one more world class defender and keeper and give Gibbs a chance to shine. We have that new boy Botelho who can cover for Gibbs.

The reason arsenal have played some fluid football in the last droughty seasons is only because of the both wide players clichy and bacary sagna…..
if clichy is let go for that bloody melo who is already 28…then arsenal could really face serious problems….
clichy’s blazing speed is what arsenal needs to win trophies than receiving red cards for melo…
its more than clear that melo is simply not made for the gunners….instead of him we gooners like to see veloso come….

Im in two minds about this deal. Yes we need another holding midfield player, Holland and Brazil have shown this world cup that having two holding midfield players in the formation works. However, Clichy is an extremely good left back and although Gibbs is good, we cant rely on him all season and if he gets injured, Traroe is no where near good enough! If we were to get rid of Clichy we would be better off selling him, hoping someone with more money than sense comes in for him like Real Madrid or Man City – Get 20 or so million for him and buy someone like Sami Khadira or Nigel De Jong – Who are both much better players. Then replace Clichy maybe. I would love to see us get Joe Cole, Shaun Wright Phillips, De Jong or Sami Khedira, Per Mertesacker and a keeper. Sell the fringe players such as Rosicky, Eduardo, Almunia – Get about 20-25 million for the three of them to buy new players. Leaving us with a team for next season of :

YES, please. Filipe Melo has the potential to transform the team. Clichy is a very average left back with a poor defensive record and a complete inability to cross the ball when he bustles forward.

Gooner Fan’s comment the best yet, shaun wright phillips and joe cole would give us the experience and composure we’ve lacked in the final 3rd, while defensively melo would offer us the steel we havent had.
Wenger would sort out melo’s temperamental issues no doubt, without taking the edge off his game. i just feel it’s worth having a player who would ensure half the premier league teams don’t think they can just kick us off the park when they play us. It’s cost us too many years now.
Would be sad to see clichy go but defensively he is awful, and wtf has he contributed going forward? doesn’t get enough assists yet alone goals for a full back. He was crap for France too against SA.

don’t sell/trade clichy away. we’re gonna regret it if arsenal really do sell him away. he’s really good actually.
a full back with excellent defensive AND offensive capabilities are very rare, and if such player do exist, god only knows how much he’d cost. some examples of such players today, in my opinion, are Sergio Ramos, Philip Lahm, Maicon, and Michel Bastos.
Clichy might be as good defensively, but at least he’s quite good in overlapping the left wing on the offensive end, and he also has the speed to run all the way back in case of a counter attack should occur, he’s fast and agile enough to cover attacking players, he’s not afraid to tackle. So basically, all we need is a couple more years to perfect his defensive skills, and believe me, he will be an excellent left back. He’ll be like philip lahm, only taller, faster and stronger. His price will skyrocket and those big, rich clubs from Spain will go crazy over him. Do NOT sell him away.

to me,Clichy was our weakest link last season.i dont mind losing him but if only we would get another good LB as cover for Gibbs who i think is good and has the potential to be one of the best LB in the world.

i would never swap clichy for melo! melo isnt even in the same league as clichy. im sorry melo but being agressive just isnt enough. howeverrr i would swap clichy for de rossi, he is a great DM and still quite young. thoughts anyone?????
