Zenit confirm interest in Arshavin’s return

Posted on December 22, 2011 by admin

According to the Russian daily Sovietsky Sports, Zenit St. Petersburg are keen on re-acquiring the Arsenal playmaker Andrei Arshavin for the original sum of €16.5 million that the North London side paid for him back in 2009.

The report suggests that Zenit are hoping to bring back the little Russian with a view of appointing him as the coach of the club’s youth team in the future.

Despite making a blistering start to his Arsenal career, the 30-year-old has failed to live up to expectations and it is being widely speculated by the British media that the Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to sell the Russian skipper to make room for further additions to his squad, not to mention the funds he could generate.

Zenit director Igor Korneyev had this to say regarding the issue: “We are always interested in Arshavin, but I can neither confirm nor deny whether we have received an offer”.

Furthermore, the club’s owner Alexei Miller was quoted as saying: “The player’s (Arshavin’s) return is possible if he decides on it.”

The playmaker was previously linked with a move back to his homeland as Anzhi Makhachkala were said to be keen on his signature, but Arshavin later stated that he was not interested in joining the ultra-rich club.

However, he is said to be seriously considering a move away from the Emirates as he fears that a lack of first-team action will cost him his place in the Russian squad for the upcoming European championships.

In my opinion, he should be sold. He is offering very little to the club at the moment and at age 30, he is certainly past his prime. Considering the amount that Zenit are willing to pay for him, it is an offer that Wenger simply cannot turn down.

I think its time to send him back to his homeland. What do you think?

perfect.AW should just release him and bring in a good replacement like E.Hanzard.It is just fair that he goes somewhere that his future seems promising.

Win Win situation…. Its must be done… all respect to Arshavin … but we need something different on the bench…more of an impact player…which he was in his yesteryears….

  6. GunnerzMan says:

Arshavin had an amazing start to his arsenal career but now he’s simply not good enough and Is getting old and lazy .Give chamberlain a chance and get rid of arshavin . 16 million is an offer wegner hopefully doesn’t refuse !

  7. WC says:

Sell sell sell before they realize that they have a dud on their hands. The 16M can buy a decent striker and maybe a defender or add a few million more for Shaqiri or Hazard.

  8. then don says:

    16 million ?….we wish
max 10 million if we can sell him
theres no top clubs that will want him his past his best only has 2-3 years left in him.

but we are short on left wingers
    gerbvinhio going arshaving going hopefully

we are left with…0 left wingers
podolski seem to be the perfect type player for us
he can play upfront on his own or on the left side of attack.

even if arshavin dose not leave we still need to bring in
2-3 players, at that then we might have a squad that can challenge for the titel.

even playing 30 million or someone like goetz or hazard it will be worth it we just need one world class player to be in the middle
    fabrigas still aint been replaced
and lets not forgot wengr didnt even spent all the money from the sales let alone the 40 million budget we was ment to have.

the board do lie to us fans, that more of a fact
every year “we have money we have money”

and yet we only buy players when we sell

16.5 mil for Arshavin. Holy Crap. Even if there is truth in the rumor that he would return to Zenit, there is definitely no truth in the transfer fee.

  12. S.H says:

There’s no way Zenit will pay the same price they sold him for. Arshavin will go for 8-12M.

That’s good news, i’ll miss though as I have an Arshavin shirt, but good thing I bought an RVP one as well.

If we can sell 5 players and get 20-25M, that’s more money that can go to buying Gotze and Podolski. I don’t even care if we don’t get these players. I’m more worried about getting rid of players to increase chances of buying new ones

Top Gooner!. Agree or not?: Thumb up 11 Thumb down 0

  13. S.H says:

And don’t even mention Hazard. He’s a Hazard to the Board’s wallet. I don’t think he’s worth anything more than 25M anyway. Way overpriced at 50M. Gotze, Reus or Eriksen are better buys.

  14. gunner says:

zenit will be stupid 2 pay almost the same amount we bought him for.its as if we took him on 3yrs loan.no way !!!! anything close to 8-9mill pounds is good deal.only if these kind of “offloads” happen, wenger will seriously consider buying some players…..u know,le prof is pretty serious when it comes to balancing the chequebooks……

  16. It’s been a long time ago that i tried to pick the mind of Arsene…………..i always failed! I’ve stopped tryin’!
The consolation i have is that i have full confidence that he means well for the club and all his action is geared to pushin’ the cause of the club ahead……….. What i’m trying to say is……whatever decision he makes, i’m sure will eventually work out! Arshavin has given us memories that’ll linger for a long, long time…..if he’ll have to leave the Emirates, he’ll deserve all the accolades he gets for doing his little bit-part in making The Arsenal what it is today- monetary value notwithstanding!.

  17. Tomma13 says:

Im not sure about selling him just yet….. Wenger needs to give him at least one full game. He is obviously not lazy because he is trying to prove to russia that he can still play. PLAY HIM AS THE CENTRAL ATTACKING MIDFIELDER!!! Give Ramsey a rest and see how good arshavin can be in his preffered position. Just watch on youtube how good Arshavin can be. he is only 30 and yet Henry who is 34 is a potential signing/Loan. GIVE HIM A GO!!!

Arshavin will always be remembered in Arsenal’s history as the man who scored 4 against liverpool & The man that got the winner for Arsenal against Barcelona.I still want him to stay but he is of no use if he can’t perform.

  20. Mehrzad says:

too good to be true but lets hope Zenit or some other club takes him even at half price we paid. He has not been a bad buy to be fair but recently it seems that his motivation and confidence is bottom low
    we need a creative midfielder
i dont think AW buys Hazard he is too expensive but hopefully pudolski
    Arshavin + Squillachi out
    Vertongen + Pudolski in

then we have good chance for some results

  21. NickA says:

Arshavin is one of my favorite players, I will be incredibly sad to see him go. I know he hasn’t been performing up to snuff recently, but he’s done a lot of great things for Arsenal.
That being said, I also really really really would like to see a signing or two made in January, so if he can’t find his form before then…I don’t know. I’m torn! lol
Honestly though, give the man a fair chance at least. Let him play a game or two in the CAM position. You know…his NATURAL position. He will do well there.

    good for him…

he will be able to coach his protege’s in
how to sign a most lucrative contract and then never ‘put in a shift’ for your team…

never tackle – track back – or complete a pass…
to laugh when missing for the umpteenth time in a match…and grumble and moan when left out of the side because of your miserable form…

if these idiots wish to part with the same fee we paid for this clown…we should quickly say ‘Spaseeba Comrade’ bank the roubles and buy in a replacement prepared to at least work for the team

Arshavin used to be my favorable in Arsenal, but think we shall let him return this time.

Arshavin…Thank You For the 4 Goals at Anfield and the Barcelona Goal. Those were memories I will never forget.

Unfortunately, 17Million is too good of a deal and I think you will do fantastic in Russia. You need to also play for your country in 2012. Good Luck my Russian Mastro.

Now, with 17 Million Arsenal can buy some great tallent.
    January looks to be exciting.
Come on AW, do your magic.

    @Tomma
well life is all about opinions –
for me he has been taking OUR money under false pretences for long enough…

i am 59 and saw my first game at Highbury at the end of the 1959-60 season – and have travelled all over europe watching my team…

and in consequence feel somewhat entitled to say what i think…

and just like my late father — ‘Arsenal till I die’
