Arsenal the only real title challengers to Chelsea left?

Arsenal were so close to joining the list of Premier League big boys to come a cropper this weekend, after Liverpool lost and Man United, Tottenham and Man City only managed a point. The Gunners needed a 97 minute penalty to claim all three points off Burnley and what an important spot kick it was.

I am not going to say that Arsenal were lucky though, as we had lots of chances to score before Granit Xhaka’s bad tackle was given the heaviest punishment by the referee. We have seen lots of tackles like that and worse escape without a sending off this season and we should have had a penalty before that anyway.

That cooly taken kick was not only decisive in regards to the result today. It could be crucial in regards to the whole season because if we had dropped points it would have been a huge boost for Chelsea, for whom everything seems to be going right at the minute, including the officials failing to give Hull City a nailed on penalty which would have made it 1-1 at Stamford Bridge.

All Arsenal can do is win our games and with the next one after Watford in the league being against Chelsea it was vital that we kept as close as possible this weekend. No one else but Arsenal put any pressure on the leaders so does that make us the only realistic challengers to Antonio Conte and his Teflon team?

  1. The real fight is for 2-4 positions, only delusional people will feel they are in for the title.

    1. Not an Arsenal or Wenger apologist but the absolute nature of this statement is quite frankly asinine.

      Next 2 weeks
Chelsea lose @ Pool, Arsenal beat Watford @ home.
Arsenal pulls the upset @ the Bridge

Chelsea lead by 2 points, title race is on.

      1. I would like to believe that trust me but arsenal had the best chance to win last season but we failed. The real fight is for the 2 to 4 position. Today arsenal fans feel the favourites, last week it were spurs fans , next week it could be Liverpool fans. Our real rivals this season are Liverpool united city and spurs.

  2. Is that a serious question? As an Arsenal fan, that question in the title is just plain embarrassing. Obviously Chelsea are in the driver’s seat but if they falter than Arsenal are only one of five other teams that could take it. Wenger is probably looking at a substantial suspension and it will be interesting to see how the team responds.

    1. Lol… The team responded very well to Wengers sending off!
The last two minutes of injury time was our best performance that I’ve seen all season lol ?
I hope that it’s a record breaking ban for Wenger ???

  3. You know full well that we will finish 10-12 points (minimum) off the leader, come May.
The reality is that our team have once again become clueless in the final third, even when Mustafi scored it took a while for the rest of the players to celebrate his headed goal… It’ was as if they had forgotten how to respond to it ??
Burnley have the worst away record in the premier league and they have also scored the least away goals. So I won’t be celebrating this result like as if it was against the spuds,Yes the 3 points is great but that was highly expected against today’s opponents and anything less would have caused an uproar, especially on here lol.
Any fan that expected a hard game today is basically admitting that we are piss poor, whereas I was expecting a very comfortable victory ?
It’s taken me over a decade to get immuned to Arsenals pooh performances and it’s great that it’s not effecting my personal life anymore lol?? long live Wenger but the sooner he F’s Off the better it will be for everyone, associated with the club.

      1. Trust me had we drawn today , you would have got 30 thumbs up. This is why I said second goal just covered our flaws. It will hurt many but even Tottenham are playing better football than us, do you think we would have made a c9meback after going 2-0 down , I doubt. We have to be honest to ourselves first of we want to succeed and unfortunately our fans are not.

        1. @wayne baker
Guess you didn’t watch the Spurs match. Or you wouldn’t be runnin that bs”come back” line…

    1. Fat whatever, are you here to annoy people?
Admin, what ever you did to Hafiz try it on this Fattysp*ds.
This is Arsenal fans forum. We should be happy when we win especially a win from the jaw of defeat.

      1. Yup. As much as I want wenger out and how I have little hope for anything this season, it won’t blind me from supporting Arsenal. A win is a win and I’m happy for the players. You got to give it to them, especially after having a great track record for bottling a chance to go above rivals. Performance however is still a tad unconvincing.

I agree with Wayne too. Only against Chelsea will we know what we really want in the league.

    2. The Arsenal played well we had over 70% position of the ball with something like 27 attacks were 8 were on target burnly had a game plan and that game plan was about hurting our players ankles and they got away scot free with it yet xaka gets red ??????
Yes they were diddling about when that happened but compare it to the challenge on ozil and he was on goal yes koscienly came back from an offside position but the high boot on the head was dangerous I thought Arsenal played well and controlled the game well even when we were put under pressure in our own half when you look at the penalty awarded to them you will see a dive as coquelin barely touched him how many time did they push kosscielny of the ball ????hope he is ok as he was looking like he had a thigh problem I like the back four of todays as Gabriel did ok specially when we went down to ten men >>>I salute our Arsenal for wining the game on the 97 minit with only 10 men on the field What an iced cold penalty scored by Alexis

  4. It’s hard thinking of Arsenal as realistic title contenders, considering we’ve become the perennial bottlers. Even if the roles were reversed and Arsenal were in Chelsea position, I still wouldn’t fancy us, whilst Wenger is in charge. If there is any hope, then we simply must beat Chelsea at the Bridge. Not just because of the points, but for the mentality of our team.

Arsenal have been awful in the big games this season, so I cannot see us beating Chelsea. Score draw at best.

  5. Of course not.
Spurs are only 1 point behind us and they drew to City which isn’t a terrible result.

I think Alexis should go back to CF with Lucas on the Left. Some time on the SuperSub bench will make Giroud better. Alexis scores more from up front

    1. So agree with you. We have not reached our best level of this season recently and we struggle more than we should. It is all nice and dandy to always compliment how well the mid-table teams defend when we play them but from time to time we have to put them away before half-time. We are not clinical enough. IMO when we play with Giroud up front we play slower ball rotation and more predictable tactics. I would like us to revert back to Sanchez in the center with two fast players next to him. It would also be good to this before we play Chelsea so that the team can get used again to play faster.

  6. Please stop mocking our club with that question in the article. We just managed to win our game today. OT : I noticed that since Giroud came back upfront,Alexis has scored less while Giroud have scored 98% of his goals in the second half and what did we buy Lucas Perez for? Wenger needs to rotate his Front three,we are really lacking the predatory kills in the final third. Today’s game should have been wrapped up in the first half. Xhaka needs to learn how to use his head more in making challenges.

  7. Beating Chelsea at the bridge is the key to joining the title race, but with the way we are playing, that may not be possible.

  8. If we can become champions so can Spurs since we still play them. So if we assume we can catch Chelsea than Spurs only being 1 point behind us, should have decent chance as well. They have been playing better than we have.

I think the fight for top 4 is more important and much closer.

We are lucky City and Liverpool and Man U are dropping points but we are by no means assured of a top 4 finish. Lose to Chelsea and we could be out of the top 4. This is going down to the wire but Chelsea are doing what they need to do.
