Is this free-agent defender perfect for Arsenal?

Aston Villa and Netherlands defender Ron Vlaar becomes a free agent today. What would this mean? Since he is a proven defender in the Premier League and still has a good two three seasons in him, interested clubs could start making the move.

For long, Arsenal and Manchester United are credited with the strongest interest for the defender. The Dutch international has proclaimed his eagerness to join a bigger club. Vlaar wants to step-up in his career and be at a club that can challenge for bigger things.

Vlaar is the club captain at Villa but has decided to run down his contract in order to assess his options. The 30 year old defender was linked with move out of Aston Villa in January but now the Dutchman is officially a free agent.

Many clubs were rumored to be interested including Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and even Southampton. However, nothing worked out and Vlaar stayed at the club. But, that didn’t stop the rumor mill going abuzz through the entire second half of the season.

Arsenal already strengthened their squad by signing a world class experienced goal keeper in Petr Cech. The squad requires strengthening in other areas and signing a defender is one such area. Of course, defender is not exactly a priority for Wenger at the moment but he definitely would want to assess his options.

Vlaar came into the limelight with stellar performance at the heart of defence for Netherlands in the World Cup. Working under the current United manager Louis Van Gaal, he made every club notice him. So, it is no surprise that Vlaar is linked with various clubs this transfer window.

Will Wenger be interested? It is difficult to say for sure but the gaffer would certainly be looking at strengthening his back four. Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker may have blossomed together last season but neither of the players fall under the ‘leader’ category.

Vlaar is a proven leader at Villa. Add it to his experience in Premier League; you would be tempted to say that Vlaar would be ideal.

Will Vlaar be tempted to move to Arsenal? Being a Gunner will tick most of his boxes and so it should be a no-brainer. Only till you bring Vlaar’s equation with Van Gaal into discussion. It is believed that they would be eager to be reunited.

What do you think? Should signing a defender be the priority for Wenger? And if so, do you think Vlaar fits the bill?

  1. Struggle to see why we would be interested in a CB.

Kos/Per & Gab/Chambers seem plenty of cover for the position unless Arsene wants to send Chambers out on loan, or will use him as the understudy to Coquelin (I pray that’s not the case).

Should that happen then we’d need a new CB, but not Vlaar for me. Much rather someone like N’kolou/Abdennour who’d have some youth to them while Per plays out his final couple of seasons.

  2. didn’t do anything to stop us battering them in f.a cup final he didn’t play well so it’s a no from me ,plus even mert is better and for me mert should be our 3rd choice……1 kos , 2 paulista , 3 mert ,4 chambers

  3. Why do fans think ‘Free Agent’ is a typical ‘Wenger’ Signing? Well, I don’t see Vlaar coming to Arsenal. Wenger won’t sign Him.

  4. According to sky sports..
Robin van Persie is being driven out of Manchester United and sold behind his back, according to Pierre van Hooijdonk.
Van Hooijdonk is quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror: “As early as January of this year, I received information from Turkey about Robin and Fenerbahce. The minute this information came, you knew that United had sent people to test the water for a move.
“Van Persie is in a difficult situation. To the outside world he says he is happy to stay and I can understand this. But Robin has the feeling that United want to get rid of him.”
The Sun are this morning reporting that Besiktas will make a move for Van Persie.

  5. If AFC don’t want him, I will take him as my first signing for the new football club I am founding: ArseOverTit City.

All players rumoured to be interested in joining AFC or are rumoured to be wanted will be signed by me.

I just have to find room for the 756 players that AFC have been connected with to date.

I may consider moving some of the acquisitions into other roles such as ground staff and catering.

  6. would prefer eziquel garay of zenit is available for 10m arsenal are interested in him he is much better than vlaar

    1. I know allot of fans dislike stats and for good reason[s] but has anyone seen the young player at Augsburg being compared with Azpilicueta. For many chels left back is best in prem even though right footed.

The young African has some really top numbers especially successful tackles, passes and interceptions. Baba Rahman, I know that playing for a CL chasing team in Germany means he will be kept busier defensively meaning more work on his plate but his numbers successful compared to unsuccessful are just amazing.

  7. Wrong Vlaar 🙂
    Now there’s ambition.
All we need is a top striker
    Emile Heskey 🙂
    EPL +ECL guaranteed 🙂

  8. In the FA cup final he was exposed asbeing a mediocre player, certainly not good enough to wear the Arsenal shirt.

  9. I DO NOT KNOW MORE THAN YOU DO ABOUT TRANSFERS…But i know the market can always play out unexpectedly especially with Wenger from what I have seen these past 3years, movements in the transfer market determines what he does..so when u hear speculations about Arda turan to chelsea, expect Oscar to be available. When you hear Di maria to Psg, expect wenger to be looking towards the brazilian Lucas. When you hear Pogba to Psg, expect smeone like Rakitic and pedro to unexpectedly become available. when u hear lacazzete to psg, smfin could happen to IBRA…so my point..lets wait and let wenger do his job

  10. The Gunners LBs need an upgrade to hault the weakness at that position that can strengthen it. I don’t think the Boss is needing another CB at this moment as he has them 3 and 3 other can be adapted ones. The Boss has a strong RBs but his 2 LBs are suspects last season. And I”ll be delighted if the Boss will instill a top quality defender at his LB position before the commencement of the new season. Hasn’t the Boss fished out Faouzi Ghoulam for this purpose? Then why is the Boss delaying to sign him up to close that chapter and move to the next target. Faouzi’s 6ft 2in is alluring and desired at the Gunners LB to efficiently deal with some of those escaped crossings last season. Which may occurr again next season if no action is taken to stop the flaw. Gooners, with Ghoulam, look at all our Gunners 1st team tallers backfour in the 1st squad next season: Debuchy/Bellerin…5ft 10in Rhino’…6ft 6in Koscielny/ DeAberu…6ft 1in Chambers…6ft 0in Ghoulam…6ft 2in Monreal/ Gibbs…5ft 10in. My prefer 1st choice to start at Wembley against Chelsea : DebuchyRhino’KoscielnyGhoulam. I am sure the Boss will teach Ghoulam how to play the Arsenal way.

  12. I like you am more intrigued by the idea of Captain credentials because I believe you can never have too many leaders playing at one Club. I do remember when we were first mooted an interest in this player they write up an article comparing him to Per and I can recall they mentioned how there would seem to be little improval if any. They highlighted how people arent too keen on Per over his lack of pace but Ron was not much better on this front or not much speedier as it may. They brought up how Ron is not as calm comfortable on the ball than to his German counterpart and was therefore prone to more mistakes. In Rons favor were his strength and his leadership qualities, not a giant difference must be said.

I think we can do allot better, we deserve a proper gem and Arsenal leader. I would be interested to know if many if any Gooners out there believe Cech should or could become our Captain. At the least he seems to be one of those players whom leads without actually needing/wearing an arm band.
