Southampton v Arsenal Player Ratings – The Ox gets a perfect 10

Arsenal gave Southampton a masterclass lesson at St Mary’s yesterday, and considering that a lot of our players were regarded as fringe players or returning crocks only makes it even more impressive. But how did you rate the individual performances?

David Ospina 8

Didn’t have much to do but did it well….

Hector Bellerin 8

Not called on much in defence but he loves bombing down the wing….

Shkodran Mustafi 8

This man is definitely our lucky charm, and quite a good defender too…

Rob Holding 8

Easy game for the youngster. Didb’t really put a foot wrong…

Kieran Gibbs 8

Our defensive supersub puts in another top performance, seems to have matured with age…

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 10

Fully deserves a 10 and a Man Of The Match performance. Involved in everything and an incredibly accurate right foot. Definitely should be challenging Ramsey in the playmaker role.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles 8

Even the Ox thought he was brilliant. Definitely a first-teamer in the future

Theo Walcott 9

How much better is Theo this year? Brilliant running, deserved the hat-trick. Great return

Jeff Reine-Adelaide 8

Another guaranteed star of the future. While the squad stays injury free Wenger is going to have lots of selection headaches…

Lucas 8

Brilliant lay off for the first Welbeck goal. Just a shame he failed to make it 6-0 at the end, but good contribution otherwise

Danny Welbeck 9

Wow how many strikers does Wenger have to choose from now? Two goals, an assist, great control in the box, and looked very lively indeed…

Subs

Alexis 8

I guess Wenger brought him on to try and keep him happy, and he quickly gave a perfect assist in a crowded box. We must keep him fit all season!

Alex Iwobi N/R

I think this is definitely the biggest ratings that I can ever remember giving, but let’s be honest, Arsenal were awesome from beginning to end!

  1. Ospina gets an 8? The guy can’t make the right decision to save his life. He’s a below average keeper, and a short one at that. The only reason he looked half decent yesterday is because we played an extremely poor Soton side who weren’t up for the fight. Ox MOTM? Sorry, but I can think of at least 3 other guys who deserved it more. Theo with a hat-trick. Welbz with 2 goals and assist. And Lucas who was superb, and was involved in virtually everything creative up front.

    1. I see I struck the cord with Ospina. People just don’t want to be honest with themselves and chose to ignore the obvious. The only sniff at goal that Soton had was because of Ospina’s mistake, and that’s a fact. Let’s see how dominant he can be against Bayern in a couple of weeks.

      1. Haha you are right – today his radar was off I would say but overall this season he has more than good. I would not be too worried about Ospina raising his level against bayern.

        1. His ball distribution is horrendous, and he can barely kick it 35-40 yards. He doesn’t have a commanding presence in the box, and every time he goes to claim the ball, he either mistimes it, and/or injures himself in the process. So what exactly makes him a good keeper?

  2. I think the ratings accurately reflect just how much more dominant we were to our opponents. Sharp dominant display, also intricate. I’d also add that some of us, were mightily surprised by some of what we seen.

Adelaide, he needs to get a mention. What impressed me was finally seeing Adelaide bulk up a bit. He looked in great physical shape, he lost that langly look he had, and now might not be too far off getting a chance with the first team. I think most of us believe that Adelaide has a future with this club, hopefully it’s a big one..

    1. Ohh Adelaide!!! I was so impressed by him yesterday. The way he breezed past their players reminded me of young Wilshere and also the way he is composed on the ball and has good physical strength makes him a great contender for our future playmaking role. He can be our Yaya Toure + Santi Cazorla + Wilshere 🙂

  3. Didn’t really get to see the match, but judging by the final scoreline and the ratings…. I must say i’m impressed
    .
Looks to me like the boys all did well and contributed immensely in their own way….. Happy 4 em all…. Now they must never take their foot off the gas nor play with their handbrakes on….. Long may the victory continue!

    1. The rating are so rosy- before we jump ahead of ourselves – Southampton’s was a B team so I would be cautious before we give the verdict on Niles and Adelaide. Good that they have at least ensured that they get one more game to show their abilities. But overall everyone did OK. There wasn’t the usual zip in our passing but we were ruthless with the opportunities we got. The guy Perez doesn’t get the credit he deserves but his intelligence in and around the penalty area is for everyone to see.

      Positives from the game:
      – Danny and Walcott have goals behind them before Chelsea and that’s hugely important.
      – Mustafi and Bellerin got game time

I see all four of them getting involved in the Chelsea game. With front three of Welbeck, Sanchez and Walcott with Ozil behind them is going to be the key. We need to be ready for the battle because i think Chelsea will most definitely be.

      1. @rd_gunner
With the exception of Bellerin,Theo,Ox and Mustafi, we too played a B team…Only our B
team was better. Plus Theo was straight back from injury. Danny had a few minutes of match time here and there.
So give them the credit due their performance.

  4. I agree with the rating.
Lets move our focus to midweek fixtures Arsenal against Watford, Liverpool-Chelsea are where my interest shall lie.
Liv shud pls win chelki 4 us

  5. Before facing Chelsea, Arsenal has to face Watford first. That will be a Premiere League match, so they will fight hard to get some points, at least a draw. This test will prove whether our squad players only perform well in lesser competition or will also dominate in top level matches. The good thing is Arsenal’s internal competition between the players is really high now, so I expect an energetic performance on Tuesday.

For the upcoming match, I think Chamberlain can be really good in the central midfield position, if he is allowed to focus on it. He can push Ramsey to perform. Bellerin is very good when attacking, because he is very fast, but sometimes he can be easily bypassed by the opponents, as seen in the FA Cup match. I think a competition with Debuchy can force him to become a better fullback. Adelaide and Niles showed good potentials, but I think they cannot push the main players yet. Gibbs has become a very good fullback now.

  6. All played very well. I wish it were like this every match lol

Wenger needs to consider starting Lucas more often
    Theo deserves to start
I would start Ox over Ramsey from now on
Holding is very good for his age. I could see him captain one day

  7. All players performed well and played as a team with a great composure. Personally, I was impressed much by the performance of Maitland-Niles. His vision and confidence reminds me of Alex Song when he was with us in this area. I hope he will get more fist team playing time in the future. Reine Adelaide was also the other youngster who impressed me in this match. He too deserve a first team involvement at a selected games. Ox may control the midfield from now on wards when we consider his performance in this game.
